Poem: I can't trust my heart

What do I do
if I can't trust my heart?
Why run a race
if I know that I am destined to lose
from the start?
Here we are my conscience,
nursing a broken heart again.
Wondering once more
if the pain and confusion will ever end.
Regretting the decision that we made weeks ago
to take a chance.
When we knew the ramifications
of story book romance.
Somewhere along the way
we lost the will and the desire.
Tried to protect the love too much,
evidently dousing the fire.
Forewarned to abstain from performing in a play
when we didn't know our part.
A question one asks his conscience
when one can not trust his heart.
