Poem: Common Ground

Dear Lord
help me see
the light
of day.
Fulfill this
simple request
I pray.
Common ground,
father I have searched long for it.
For common ground
I have shoveled through
a lot of s**t.
Dating someone only to find a shallow stream.
A stagnant lake, lacking the initiative
and the willingness
to dream.
A breathtaking, narrow street
running along a winding, bumpy road.
Where the simplest analogy
has to be conveyed in Morse code.
In the name of compromise
I allowed my standards to fall;
Many times have I knocked my head
against the wall.
Locking myself into a cage with birds
that can not fly.
Fleeing captivity only after realizing
that life was passing me by.
Nursing my bruises like a boxer
after the final round;
Still seeking, still hoping
for common ground.
Amen.
