Poem: Finish Last

Once again, I’m left to rummage
through the ashes of the past.
Witness the fires of another relationship fade

and watch a good man finish last.
This time I invested my heart,

the previous opportunity I pledged my soul.
Yet once again I am forced to surrender my flag

from hope’s battered pole.
I never yielded without a fight;

I suffered scars that time won’t mend.
But when the well of compromise ran dry,

I knew the quest had to end.
So here I lay staring at the dark cracks in the ceiling.
Searching for flickers of light revealing

to grant some emotional healing.
But my fate is jaded

and the grenade like die of her infidelity has been cast.
I’m still reeling from the blast,

a good man destined to finish last.
