Poem: Perfect Miracle - Nassau, Bahamas

I always knew that God’s divine grace
would come my way.
I always knew that I would receive an answer
to my prayers someday.
Darling you are my perfect miracle,
proof that God listened to my pleas.
Because of you I will continually praise the Almighty
on bended knees.
A beautiful angel has taken the form of flesh and bone
to be by my side.
Finally, I can remain stationery like ship wreckage
cast upon the shore by the tide.
I often dreamt of experiencing
these magical moments we share;
now I can kiss that which I only imagined to be near.
I feel honored and blessed to have you in my life, my Dear.
Sometimes when I’m holding you close at night
I cry a happy tear.
You have completed me from within like a foot to a shoe.
I know what it means to be truly loved
and I want to return it exponentially to you.
I will cherish you as Christ does the church,
comforting you until I die.
You are my perfect miracle,
the reason why my heart continues to fly.

Poem: The Lionfish - Nassau, Bahamas

Our waters are being invaded by a lionfish
that has many names,
a species that has no natural predators.
Our culture is being ravaged by a social disease
whose unconstructive side effects are to maim, rob,
kill and plunder.
Poisonous to the slightest touch are the spines
of this venomous marine life,
a painful threat to innocent divers
and scale-filled schools.
Scarred for life are teachers pummeled by parents and kids
or visitors stabbed in neighboring schools.
Beware of the large finned scorpionfish,
it likes to swallow its prey whole.
Fear and ignorance is the criminal’s main weapon,
and our national and touristy reputation is paying the toll.
But first one must examine the sources,
how the aquatic devils managed to flourish in our back yard.
Look at our community in the mirror
and deal with the poor parenting issues and moral complacency
that caught us off guard.
Prevent people who have lavish aquariums with lionfish
from releasing them into our native seas.
Reduce the exorbitant amount of children having children
and counteract the rise in illiteracy.
The lionfish has lightning quick reflexes;
it likes to corner its victim during the hunt.
Newspapers, preachers and gossipers conceal
the causes of immorality by blaming violent movies,
struggling teachers, government institutions
and Haitian immigrants.
Now that we know that the voracious dragonfish exists
we must eliminate it from our shoals.
Address the root causes of domestic violence
before rage and emotional outbursts result
in stab wounds, rape or bullet holes.
The Bible states in Proverbs 22 verse 6,
“to train up a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
But with daily visual examples of adultery,
littering, promiscuity, traffic violations
and illicit gambling our kids will fail to reap the benefits.
Our shallow waters are being invaded
by a lethal lionfish that has many names,
a species that has no natural predators.
“We”, as a nation need to fix
the absence of parenting skills in the home
and stop relying on police, politicians,
pastors and teachers to be our saviors.

Poem: Monster - Nassau, Bahamas

You wanted a comforter in bed;
you desired a trophy to escort by the arm.
You said that you needed to stay with me,
but secretly your finger
was always near the fire alarm.
You let me talk about marriage
and award names to kids
I hoped to share.
You let me plan a future for us
even though you knew
that you wouldn’t be there.
What type of man does that to a woman
that he claims to love
with all of his heart?
What type of monster
constructs another’s greatest dream
and then rips it apart?
You attended my family weddings
and holiday events,
smiled while fondly embracing me
in every picture we took.
We wrote chapters of intimacy
and destiny together
and then suddenly
you lit a raging fire to our book.
You stole my innocence
and poisoned my faith in God and man.
If you were a roach
I would spray you
until I emptied a new insecticide can.
Your mental picture is on my mind’s door
and every day I pierce it
with tens of darts.
You are a monster
who claims to secure a woman’s heart,
then later rips it apart.
