Poem: No You - Nassau, Bahamas

She wakes up in the frigid bed,
rolls over
and realizes that there is “no you.”
Escapes the solace of her sheets
and walks upon life’s icy tile
with out you, her familiar shoe.
The eerie silence teases her
with sounds of your voice
from a previous yesterday.
The awareness of being empty within
has been haunting her
since the day you went away.
She looks in the adjacent closet
and spots idol hangers
that used to bear the outfits you wore.
There is more space now,
more cohesion now,
but her heart yearns for more.
She sees visions of your welcome face
in the mirror;
She smells the phantom scent of your cologne.
But each bold step this woman takes
on life’s tile reminds her that she is alone.
So she returns to her nest,
retreats to her sheets,
and stares aimlessly into the blue.
Then she closes her eyes, sighs in disbelief,
and attempts to live another day
with “no you.”
